As navies become increasingly reliant on technology and automation, they are also becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks on their naval vessels and associated systems. These attacks on ships and other naval systems can cause operational failure, physical damage, or loss of life.
Attacks on mission-critical naval systems can have serious consequences. For example, a cyberattack on a ship's navigation system could cause it to travel off course or run aground. A cyberattack on a ship’s propulsion system could strand it at sea. As noted in the Royal Navy’s 2022-25 Digital Plan, “..systems must be resilient so they can take a cyber punch and fall-back to reversionary modes if needed, whilst maintaining operational output”.
To mitigate the negative impacts of cyberattacks on mission-critical vessel systems, global navies need to focus on securing their systems at many levels including their onboard IT and OT systems, on-vessel networks, and the communications systems that connect them elsewhere.
DEFENSA's real-time cyberattack healing capability can be a valuable solution for any navy who aims to maintain the continuous operation of their existing marine fleets even in the face of invisible but potentially fatal cyber domain threats.
DEFENSA Inline is a combined hardware/software solution where small hardware devices running DEFENSA software are deployed inline throughout a ship’s networks. Also, our gateway device connects these installed appliances to our onboard OAM (operations, administration, and management) console which is used to setup, administer, and manage the deployed devices across all the ship’s networks.
DEFENSA Embedded is a software-only solution that is deployed on ECUs or other network devices on the ship or vehicle that is still in its design phase. DEFENSA can simply be co-located on an ECU to detect, correct, and heal cyberattacks (similar to DEFENSA Inline), or it can be designed-in at the system level to assign, revoke, and reassign application authority to achieve dynamic fault tolerance and application resiliency.
