As armies become increasingly reliant on technology and automation, they also becoming progressively vulnerable to real-time cyberattacks on combat vehicles such as armoured personnel carriers, tanks, and military trucks. These attacks can target steering, communication networks, and other operational systems that can lead to rendering systems useless, mission jeopardy, or even loss of life.
While independent weapon systems like missile launchers or other ordnance might have certain cyber defense capability already designed-in, functional systems of the vehicle itself (eg. steering, acceleration, braking, etc.) remain vulnerable to malicious infiltration or expropriation.
To mitigate the cybersecurity exposure of combat vehicles, global Armed Forces need to focus on securing their systems at every level including the operational and functional onboard network systems during the combat vehicle’s design phase.
DEFENSA Embedded is a software-only solution that is deployed on ECUs or other network devices on the vehicle that is still in its design phase. DEFENSA can simply be co-located on an ECU to detect, correct, and heal cyberattacks (similar to DEFENSA Inline), or it can be designed-in at the system level to assign, revoke, and reassign application authority to achieve dynamic fault tolerance and application resiliency.
