There is a strong trend in the commercial marine sector to continually reduce the requirement for on-vessel personnel and to therefore increase the reliance on onboard automated guidance and operational systems. As such, the criticality of safeguarding onboard marine transport systems from cyberattack is paramount. As evidenced by the impact of the 2021 blocking of the Suez Canal by the container ship “Ever Given”, global commerce and world population wellbeing can be dramatically and negatively affected by even just one ideally placed event, be it accidental or intentional. Therefore, the need for real-time detection, correction, and healing of cyberattacks in maritime commercial operations is a top priority. DEFENSA delivers exactly this. And it can deliver it to ships already in use, and to those that are currently in design.
According to the Lloyd’s Register Global Marine Trends 2030 report, “the commercial marine industry is increasingly becoming essential as the macro effect of factors such as economic and population growth, resource demand, accelerated technological advances, the rise of consumers and cities in large emerging countries, and environmental challenges takes hold. As such, the value and criticality of marine cargo and commerce is likely to only increase.”
DEFENSA Inline is a combined hardware/software solution where small hardware devices running DEFENSA software are deployed inline throughout a ship’s networks. Also, our gateway device connects these installed appliances to our onboard OAM (operations, administration, and management) console which is used to setup, administer, and manage the deployed devices across all the ship’s networks.
DEFENSA Embedded is a software-only solution that is deployed on ECUs or other network devices on the ship or vehicle that is still in its design phase. DEFENSA can simply be co-located on an ECU to detect, correct, and heal cyberattacks (similar to DEFENSA Inline), or it can be designed-in at the system level to assign, revoke, and reassign application authority to achieve dynamic fault tolerance and application resiliency.
